Murray Hunter Senior Associate

Murray Hunter is a Senior Associate at ALT Advisory and leads our Special Projects division.

He specilaises in digital rights, advocacy, and communications, and works to solve problems at the intersection of policy, technology, and society. 

Before joining ALT Advisory, Murray held various advocacy and leadership roles at the Right2Know Campaign, Open Secrets, and the amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism. He has also given media consulting to a range of civil society initiatives, most recently the South Africa Media Innovation Program.

Murray has authored investigative reports and publications on communications surveillance and data protection, and in 2019 published a children’s book about surveillance capitalism.

He received a Bertha Activist Fellowship in 2014, and the Ruth First Fellowship in 2021.

 Notable projects.

  • Assisting UNESCO in the development of a draft guidance on fair-compensation mechanisms to support a fair-value exchange between major digital actors and news publishers.
  • Revising and updating SANEF’s election training modules ahead of the 2026 municipal elections, with a particular focus on addressing new developments in AI-driven disinformation, and the growing challenges for governance of municipalities.
  • Developing practical guidelines on responsible use of AI in East African newsrooms with Thomson Reuters Foundation.
  • Developing a gamified education resource for the UN Refugee Agency to strengthen young people’s resilience to anti-foreigner disinformation.
  • Building a user-friendly mobile-first platform for a Moxii Africa web guide on challenging SLAPP suits and weaponisation of the courts.
