Sophie Smit Associate
Sophie is an Associate at ALT Advisory, working on information integrity, digital rights, and the protection of vulnerable and marginalised groups.
Her work engages with the legal and policy challenges arising at the intersection of technology, freedom of expression, and access to justice, including the safety of journalists, activists, and human rights defenders in digital spaces.
Sophie also leads our Project Management & Events practice.
She holds B.A., LL.B., and LL.M. (in Human Rights Advocacy and Litigation) degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand, and is an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

Sophie is an Associate at ALT Advisory, working on information integrity, digital rights, and the protection of vulnerable and marginalised groups.
She has gained experience across a range of matters, including gender-based violence, media viability, migration, and constitutional and administrative law, and regularly engages in public-facing legal education and advocacy initiatives.
In particular, her work engages with the legal and policy challenges arising at the intersection of technology, freedom of expression, and access to justice, including the safety of journalists, activists, and human rights defenders in digital spaces.
Sophie holds a B.A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand, as well as an LL.M. in Human Rights Advocacy and Litigation degree, for which she received distinctions in Advanced Administrative Law and International Human Rights Law.
She is also an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa and an Associate at Power Law Africa, where she completed her articles.
Before joining ALT Advisory, Sophie worked as a legal researcher at the Helen Suzman Foundation, where she spent four years conducting research and preparing submissions on a range of public law matters, with a particular focus on administrative and constitutional law.She also has a strong interest in international law and completed the René Cassin Foundation – International Institute for Human Rights Summer Session on International Human Rights, Humanitarian and Criminal Law.
