— How ALT-AiM works.

As AI adoption gathers significant momentum, we’ve developed ALT-AiM to support our partners with selecting, deploying, and using AI within their organisations responsibly, ethically, and lawfully. 

ALT-AiM is based on an “iterative” policy development and AI deployment philosophy, which enables graduated use case development and AI deployment, collective upskilling, and organisational responsiveness to rapid AI developments.

Fully deploying the model is a six-step process which takes 6-12 months, and we support our partners at each step of the process to ensure intentional, responsible, and practical AI adoption. 

Engagement

To initiate the ALT-AiM process, we meet with our partners to explain our approach to AI deployment and understand their rationale for AI adoption. Thereafter, we discuss potential use cases, professional ethical considerations, available budget, tooling, and potential efficiency gains.
Step 1: Engage

Initial policy development

Following the initial engagement, we support our partners with an “iterative” policy drafting process, which includes a review of existing policies and the development of an initial AI Adoption Policy, which ensures organisational safeguards, controls, and agreed ways of work, and “authorises” certain use cases and AI tools.
Step 2: Develop

Infrastructure & tooling

Once an initial policy is in place, we work with our partners to develop and deploy their AI infrastructure and train their appointed “AI Admins” in line with their authorised use cases and AI tools, and within their organisational budgets and capacity constraints.
Step 3: Build

Roll-out & testing

After the AI infrastructure deployment, we host a series of workshops with our partners to ensure that all members of their team are onboarded and trained on their AI Adoption Policy and the responsible and authorised use of AI tools.
Step 4: Deploy

Policy iterations & graduated deployment

Once there is increased collective knowledge, we work with our partners to iterate and develop their AI Adoption Policy to include newly tested and authorised use cases and AI tools, and to enhance precautionary measures and controls. This is a graduated process, achieved through 4-6 substantial policy revisions and internal engagements.
Step 5: Iterate

Momentum building & hand-over

Finally, we provide ongoing training and support to team members based on their individual AI competencies to ensure that no team member is left behind, and we work with the appointed “AI Champions” to ensure continued upskilling, testing, and deployment within their organisations.
Step 6: Sustain

ALT AI Network

Partner organisations that successfully deploy ALT-AiM automatically become members of the ALT AI Network, which provides updates on regulatory developments and new AI tools.

Beyond the ALT-AiM process, we provide additional training to our partners to ensure that all team members are properly onboarded and upskilled.

  • Why ALT Advisory?

    Since 2017, we’ve been at the leading edge of developments in data privacy and digital rights in South Africa and around the African continent. Over the past four years, we’ve been actively involved in researching and advocating for responsible AI Governance.

    During this time, we’ve supported multiple public interest organisations and actors with advice and regulatory compliance, including compliance with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act, and we continue to support our partners with expert guidance on emergent technologies, including on AI. 

    The culmination of this work has led us to develop, test, and iterate ALT-AiM internally to ensure that AI can be deployed and used responsibly, safely, and practically.
