ICASA calls for submissions on Discussion Document on Digital Sound Broadcasting
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has called for submissions on its Discussion Document on Digital Sound Broadcasting Services (Discussion Document). Submissions should be directed to:
- Mr Ndumiso Dana
- Email: [email protected]
- Fax: +27 (0)11 566 3818
The purpose of the Discussion Document is to solicit views from the public and to conduct an inquiry in respect of the prospect of implementing digital sound broadcasting (DSB) services in South Africa, and how the implementation of DSB services can improve the efficiency and management of radio frequency spectrum. This step forms part of the broader digital migration process under consideration. As explained in the Discussion Document, DSB is a form of audio broadcasting technology intended to deliver superior quality sound using digital communications technology, and is a new, digital signal delivery system capable of delivering sound and data in all forms.
The Discussion Document sets out the digital migration policy and legislative framework for DSB in South Africa; DSB trials conducted in South Africa in terms of licences granted by ICASA on different DSB technologies; international agreements that impact DSB in South Africa; international benchmarking of DSB in regions where it is already operational; and a market analysis.
Interested parties wishing to participate in the oral hearings should indicate as such in their submissions.
The Discussion Document is accessible here.
