Call for comment: Draft Sports Broadcasting Services Amendment Regulations
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has extended the deadline for comment on the draft Sports Broadcasting Services Amendment Regulations, 2018 (draft Regulations) to 15 March 2019.
The draft Regulations include, amongst other things, a proposed list of national sporting events that would be compulsory for a free-to-air licensee (such as the SABC) to broadcast with full live coverage. In this regard, the following sporting events are listed:
- Summer Olympics;
- Paralympics;
- FIFA World Cup;
- Africa Cup of Nations (male and female);
- ICC Cricket World Cup;
- ICC T20 Cricket World Champions;
- International Boxing Federation;
- National Netball;
- Commonwealth Games; and
- International Association of Athletics Federation.
The draft Regulations also propose a list of national sporting events offered to a subscription broadcasting licensee on a non-exclusive basis under sub-licensing conditions; and a list of minority and developmental sporting events to be broadcast by subscription and free-to-air broadcasters.
Submissions should be emailed to [email protected] and [email protected] by 15 March 2019. Persons making submissions should also indicate whether they would like an opportunity to make oral presentations.
