Call for submissions: UN report on violence against women journalists
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, Ms Dubravka Šimonović, has identified the issue of violence against women journalists as the subject of her next thematic report to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2020.
Ms Šimonović has identified a trend of increasing intimidation, threats of rape, threats against family, and sexual harassment in the newsroom and in the field. While the digital era has created new opportunities for women journalists, it has also provided a platform for new forms of online violence including cyberstalking, defamation campaigns, “doxing”, “sextortion” and “trolling”, as well as the non-consensual distribution of intimate content (or “revenge porn”).
Accordingly, the Special Rapporteur invites written submission on this theme from interested stakeholders.
Submissions are due 10 March 2020 and can be emailed to [email protected].
