Italian DPA imposes limitation on TikTok’s processing of children’s data
On 22 January 2021, the Italian Data Protection Authority (DPA) imposed an immediate limitation on the processing performed by TikTok with regard to the data of users whose age could not be established with certainty. The aim of this measure is to afford immediate protection to minors and to ensure compliance with the age-related requirements.
The limitation will apply provisionally until 15 February 2015 as the Italian DPA plans to conclude its further assessment by that date.
In December 2020, the Italian DPA had already notified several infringements to TikTok, including poor attention to the protection of minors, the easy avoidance of the registration ban applied to children under the age of 13 years, non-transparent and unclear information provided to users, and default settings falling short of privacy requirements.
The full statement by the Italian DPA is accessible here.
