Online portal for the registration of Information Officers is live
The Information Regulator has officially launched the online portal for the registration of Information Officers (IO) and Deputy Information Officers (DIO). This follows the Guidance Note published on 1 April 2021 that provides guidance and procedures for:
- the obligations and liabilities of IOs and DIOs;
- registration of IOs with the Information Regulator;
- updating the details of IOs;
- the designation of Deputy Information Officers; and
- the delegation of duties and responsibilities of the IOs to the DIOs.
In terms of the Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 (POPIA) IOs and DIOs play an important role in ensuring compliance with the conditions for the lawful processing of personal information.
IOs and DIOs are required, in terms of Section 55(2) of POPIA, to take up their duties only after being registered with the Regulator, are encouraged to complete the online registration forms before 1 July 2021.
The Information Regulator has noted that they are experiencing a high volume of registrations on the portal, which is causing some delays and technical issues. These issues are being addressed by their technicians.
