Joint comment on draft regulations relating to COVID-19 data collection
On 15 March 2022, the Minister of Health published a draft set of amendments to the Regulations Relating to the Surveillance and the Control of Notifiable Medical Conditions, with a period for public comment that closed on 24 April 2022.
Following the end of South Africa’s declared state of disaster on COVID-19, on 4 April 2022, these draft regulations would serve to absorb aspects of South Africa’s COVID-related policies into existing regulations governing surveillance of serious diseases, especially in relation to data collection and contact tracing.
ALT Advisory and Professor Jonathan Klaaren (University of the Witwatersrand) made a joint comment on the draft regulations, with a focus on data protection.
