UN: Environment Assembly tackles climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution
The sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (“UNEA”) is underway at the United Nations Environment Programme (“UNEP”) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. UNEA is the world’s apex decision-making body for matters related to environmental sustainability.
Scheduled from 26 February to 1 March 2024, the theme for this sixth session is “effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution” — referred to as the three planetary environmental crises. The week-long programme covers a wide-ranging set of topics, including:
- The use of artificial intelligence to respond to the triple planetary crises;
- Citizen science, grassroots defenders, and the role of civil society in multilateralism;
- An energy transition for nature and people;
- The role of financial institutions;
- Advancing gender and indigenous perspectives;
- Co-benefits of cleaner air and climate change mitigation;
- Multilateral actions for responsible mining;
- Climate-induced human mobility and displacement;
- Circular economies, extended producer responsibility, and transforming the textile value chain;
- Sustainable transport fuels;
- Climate change governance and plastics; and
- Shaping a water-resilient world.
