New Resource: Revised Toolkits on AI Governance in Africa
The ALT team recently worked with the Thomson Reuters Foundation to update the toolkit series on AI Governance in Africa, with the aim of empowering journalists and civil society organisations to participate in public discourse, drive policy and regulatory change and advocate for ethical and responsible AI deployment.
The toolkit series, which builds on a previous series published in 2023, unpacks the context of AI governance, in Africa and globally, and considers advocacy approaches for future governance. The revisions come in a year of significant change in the global dynamics of AI governance, including the enacted of the EU’s AI Act, the finalisation of a global treaty on AI and human rights, and the enactment of state-level laws in at least 30 of the US state legislatures.
- Part 1 provides an introduction to AI governance principles and approaches, and outlines international frameworks, with case studies from the European Union, the United States, and China. It discusses governance trends and considerations included in governance instruments.
- Part 2 examines existing and emerging AI governance instruments in Southern Africa – in particular, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. More broadly, it also outlines continental responses and details existing governing measures in Africa.
- Part 3 explores a series of key questions for the design of advocacy strategies on AI governance, particularly in African contexts.
We joined our partners at the Thomson Reuters Foundation to deliver the first trainings with this toolkit series at a workshop with CSO and media participants from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
