Survey: Legal challenges and threats faced by journalists in South Africa and Kenya
The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF), with support from ALT Advisory, is developing country-specific “deep dive” research reports on South Africa and Kenya to identify and contextualise legal challenges and threats faced by journalists in the spaces within which they work.
These reports aim to shed light on the unique and nuanced challenges and threats in each country and develop recommendations that will serve to upskill journalists, newsrooms, and legal teams.
Additionally, the reports aim to serve as a resource that will inform the work of civil society organisations, local advocates, legislators, and members of the judiciary to identify opportunities for legal reform, track trends relating to legal threats, and develop informed responses.
Key members in the media spaces in South Africa and Kenya are invited to input into the study by completing a brief survey:
The survey should take no more than 10 minutes, and responses will be kept in confidence.
Responses are due by 7 October 2025.
Should you have any questions or have any further interest in this study, including by joining upcoming focus group discussions, please contact Michael Power (South Africa) or Andrew Songa (Kenya).
We’re thankful for your time.
